What is prison art?

I recently left The News and now have time to post some fresh stories. So I’ll throw up a few right now in rapid succession. This first one is an interview with Gregg Stone (page 1, page 2), an American artist who collects drawings and other pieces by U.S. convicts, mostly Hispanic gang members. Also a curator, Stone has trucked his purchases all over southern California and recently to Mexicali, the Baja California border city, to set up exhibits and spread the gospel of prison art.

It’s not every day that you see “galería” and “carceles” (“jails”) in the same press release – so I decided to track down Stone, even though I knew I’d never be heading north to check out his show.
